Competition Rules
General
- The Idaho Young Scientist Competition is for 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students who live in Bingham County, or the surrounding areas. This is an individual competition open to any student, of any school, including Homeschool students.
- Students are expected to turn in an individual project. There will be no group or team projects accepted.
- Only one entry will be allowed per student.
- This competition consists of three main components: the experiment, display, and presentation. Entries lacking any of the three components will not qualify for an award.
- The student must be registered prior to April 6, 2019.
- Projects must be completed by the students themselves and should reflect work appropriate for the students age.
- Judges evaluate each project in accordance with the competition requirements. The score a judge assigns is final.
- Judges decisions are final. Individuals will not receive raw scoresheets or be able to review scores from individual judges.
- Actions or comments from students that malign, disparage, or harass event coordinators, volunteers, or other participants will result in the students’s disqualification.
- Destruction of another person's project or display will result in disqualification.
Experiment
- The experiments are to be completed prior to the competition.
- All experiments are to be done following proper safety procedures with the proper supervision.
- Demonstrations will be allowed, but they should merely demonstrate a principle rather than recreate the experiment.
Display
- Each student should create a display that shows the judges the following information:
- The title or name of the experiment
- A description of the problem or question that is driving their experiment
- The process or methods the students used in their research
- Data that was collected during the experiment
- A summary of the results and the students conclusion
- Must be on a tri-fold display board.
- The exhibit must be no larger than 76 cm deep (2 ½ ft. front-to-back) by 122 cm wide (4 ft. side-to-side) by 274 cm high (9 feet top-to-bottom) .
- Any display element that could be hazardous to the public is prohibited (i.e. drugs, caustic or flammable chemicals, microbial or fungal cultures, live animals, exposed or frayed wiring which carries current, etc.).
Presentation
- The presentation is limited to four minutes per person. If a student exceeds four minutes, they will receive a penalty.
- Following the presentation, there will be a 3-4 minute question and answer session with the judges.
- Only the student presenting will be allowed to speak or answer questions with the judges.
